1. Sustainable Agriculture Adult Apprenticeship Program
An opportunity for adults interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in sustainable urban agriculture through hands-on experience, instruction and support from mentor farmers.
Who We Are: The Grow Dat Youth Farm’s mission is to nurture a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing food. Young people are hired to grow food for their community and participate in a 19-week leadership development program from January to June. By using organic growing methods, we grow vegetables, herbs, fruit and mushrooms from October to July and cover crop during the hottest months.
About the Apprenticeship: Grow Dat is interested in hosting adult apprentices who are interested in advancing their gardening/agricultural skills by working on a market farm. Work with our farm team on our beautiful 4-acre site in City Park to help reach our production goals. Over the course of the internship, interns will advance their knowledge and experience in:

  • Garden/Farm planning
  • Weed recognition and abatement
  • Soil building & mulching Compost creation and maintenance
  • Cover crop selection, methods and rotation Irrigation design and installation
  • Greenhouse & seedling propagation
  • Planting & transplanting
  • Succession planting
  • Harvest techniques, post harvest handling, marketing
  • Summer season farm tasks including non-native plant removal and site and campus maintenance
  • Record keeping
  • Tool use and maintenance
  • Leading volunteer groups on farm tasks
  • Receiving regular constructive feedback from Farm Manager and Farm Assistant

Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform a diversity of farm tasks. Must be able to accept constructive criticism. Must have positive attitude and be able to work as part of a team. Minimum commitment of 3 months (with 6-12 months preferable).
Work hours: 12 hours per week, schedule flexible based on schedule Compensation and Benefits: The apprenticeship is un-paid but includes benefits of weekly donated farm produce, strong mentorship from the Farm Manager and Farm Assistant, and an opportunity to work with a diverse team committed to building more sustainable and food-secure New Orleans. School credit can also be coordinated.

2. Bookkeeper/Accountant

The mission of the Grow Dat Youth Farm is to nurture a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing food.

The Grow Dat Youth Farm seeks a Bookkeeper/Accountant. The Bookkeeper/Accountant’s primary responsibilities are: Payroll, and Financial Management which includes Monthly Account Reconciliations, Monthly Financial Statements, and Grant Reporting.

The Bookkeeper/Accountant is responsible for the following tasks in order help support the financial health of the organization:

  • Process payroll (though Paychex) track income and expenses in our chart of accounts
  • make deposits and track cash boxes
  • run financial reports in Quickbooks including balance sheet, budget vs. actuals; earned income/revenue, etc.
  • manage checking, savings, line of credit and credit cards and reconciliations
  • monitor cash flow
  • invoice customers
  • cut checks to vendors and oversee employee reimbursements
  • assist in light HR management
  • assist in tax reporting and prep
    The Bookleeper/Accountant is overseen by first the Assistant Director.

Requirements:
Desire to be a part of a diverse team in a non-profit start up environment.
Knowledge of bookkeeping systems, experience working in Quickbooks, experience managing and processing payroll.
Ability to work on a Mac (and use Quickbooks for Mac).
Interest in improving financial systems and creating new ones that follow best practices in the industry.
16 hours per week
Interest in youth development and/or sustainable agriculture is a plus.

This is an Independent Contractor position. Pay scale ($17-22/hour) is based on qualifications and experience.
